3🔍 Why it matters — what to watch for
An arm spread to make the body bigger is an offence; an arm in a natural position often isn't penalised at close range — “did it make the body unnaturally bigger” is the main test. Stricter for attackers: if the ball hits a player's arm and he scores straight away, the goal is ruled out. The most debated rule of the VAR era.
On the call you'll hear“Was that handball in the box?! VAR's checking… the arm was in a natural position — no handball.”
