The most famous stat, yet many teams want lower possession by design (counter-attackers). “65% possession and a loss” isn't rare. Read it with xG to tell “being allowed the ball” from “genuinely on top.”
On broadcasts you'll see“68–32 on possession, but the away side have had more shots. They're set up to counter.”
